The MVSC Junior/Senior high school team coached by veteran dads Jeff Asch, Greg Moore & Craig Miller battled it out this weekend in the county tournament for our oldest recreational division. With a depleted roster, they faced a strong Dixie Youth Soccer team with 22 players, but the MVSC squad was bolstered by a few players brought up from the younger high school division.
It was a highly spirited, fun but physical match that saw the score tied at 1 - 1 at the end of regulation. Then, with the sun long set below the profile of Mt. Tam, and daylight fading, Ellie Bloom found the net off a corner kick for her second goal of the match, scoring the "golden goal" in the 2nd minute of overtime for a triumphant win.
With several seniors on the roster, some of these girls are graduating, and may have played their last game of organized soccer, while many others will no doubt be taking the field for high school tryouts in a few weeks. Similarly, we owe a huge debt of thanks to all the coaches, each of who has over 10 years of volunteer commitment in our club, usually with two teams. A special thanks to Jeff Asch, who retires after 12 years of coaching for MVSC. It’s bitter sweet when a coach gets retired (just because his kids grow up). Nice way to go out, though!
Congratulations to all the players and coaches for being such a wonderful example of recreational sports in our community.
